The wealthiest ZIP codes in Kansas City
Editor's Note: The Business Journals evaluated almost 33,200 ZIP codes to compile its wealth index. The wealthiest ZIP codes rankings are intended to capture the greatest concentrations of wealth. The rankings are derived from a weighted calculation that relies on multiple demographic and economic data points. The methodology estimates accumulated wealth and measures its concentration within a geographic area, considering factors including per capita income, median home value, population density and median age. About the List: Information on The List was obtained from the Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey five-year estimates — the most current available. The five-year estimates include data collected between 2019 and 2024. ZIP codes with a land area of less than 0.5 square miles are not included. ACBJ's methodology considers per capita income, median home value, population density and median age, while adjusting for land area. For more details, read the List's full methodology here. The Kansas City Business Journal's local rankings include only ZIP codes within the Kansas City area, which includes the counties of Jackson, Ray, Platte, Cass and Clay in Missouri; and Johnson, Wyandotte and Leavenworth in Kansas. KCBJ further limited the rankings to ZIP codes that had a minimum threshold of $40,000 for per-capita income and a poverty rate of less than 15% to eliminate ZIPs with high population density but otherwise low income levels and relatively high poverty rates. The online version of this ranking expands beyond what appears in print; another 65 ZIP codes are included in our digital rankings, in addition to the 22 featured in this week's print edition. This week's List continues a shift in our research methodology and philosophy, one that emphasizes more data and context for readers while better coordinating the resources available to us and our 40-plus sister publications under the American City Business Journals flag. This effort identified thousands of new local records — and cumulatively, tens of thousands of new businesses across ACBJ's footprint — last year alone.
